Road Hubs faq/Tips

How can I recognize if my UltraRear SX/SLX/SPX freewheel body is for Shimano 10s or 11s?
You can check this measure.
Shimano 10s: X= 34.3mm

Shimano 11s: X= 36.5mm

Note that in a correct configuration of Shimano 11s frewheel the hub has a bronze right axle end.

Can I convert my UltraRear SX/SLX/SPX to Shimano 11s?
Yes. The Shimano 11 speed cassette requires a wider freewheel body and different hub center-line.
Extralite UltraRear SX/SLX/SPX Shimano 11s standard are now ready available. Retrofit kits are available for UltraRear SX/SLX/SPX.

Important tech note
The freewheel installation requires rather high tech skills, quality tools and a well-lighted, clean working environment.
The installation always involves the following operations:
- Perfect cleaning of freewheel internals
- Replacing the old "TX-Bushing" with the new one supplied.
- Dry pre-assembling of hub with the new freewheel + TX-bushing and tuning of axial tolerances
- Freewheel greasing and final assembling
- In some cases it's also necessary to adjust rim camber
Before ordering carefully read and consider the instructions (our website's Tips & Manual section) to decide if you can really do it by yourself.

What type of manteinance I should do on UltraHubs?
On UltraHubs manuals you find "Manteinance Level 1" for basic cleaning, lubrication and reassembly.

Warning: Use only very soft density grease AluGrease Super 1.
Medium or hard density grease may cause un-complete pawl engagement and this will seriously damage freewheel mechanism.
Chemical additives may affect phisical properties of Lip-Seal, O-ring spring and Bushings.

I feel too much resistance on my UltraRear (SX/SLX/SPX) cassette, can I solve this?
Yes but unscrew the Micro Tuner is not the solution.
Probably your OR-Seal is too much in contact with hub body.

If you want less stiction you have to insert a thin 0.15 -0.3mm washer (we can provide) between Central Bearing and Axle shoulder.
Follow the instructions of chapter "Tuning O-ring Seal" on Level 2 manual.

Is My UltraRear SX (2010 or before) compatible with Campagnolo 11-speed?
Yes, it's compatible. However 11-speed Campagnolo cog can (depending on tolerances) slightly rub against drivetrain spokes/holders. We supply special thin spacers (0.3mm) to fine tune clearance.
Warnings
1) Use our spacers if strictly necessary (
cog rubbing against drivetrain spokes/holders).
2) Do not insert any other spacers.
3) Properly align all cogs in contact with to freehub splines.
4) Tighten cassette locking ring to a moderate torque (10-15Nm).

I have a Shimano compatible rear UltraHub SX/SLX, how do I convert it to Campagnolo (or vice-versa)?
Changing UltraRear hub cassette type is possible but not as simple as it might seem.
The following parts have to be changed:
Freewheel body
Left and right axle ends Hub
Internal tuning and spacing
Rim lacing camber

It's normally easier to send your wheel/hub to us for this sevicing, in this case it will cost approx. € 180 + shipping.

Can I service UltraHubs/Wheels?
UltraHubs are fully serviceable, however we divided hub maintenance into 3 levels of technical know how:
Level 1: Freewheel cleaning/oiling is in. No special tools are required, we recommend it only to technically skilled owners and mechanics.
Level 2: Tolerance matching of freewheel bushings, axial tuning. Special tools are required, we recommend it only to highly technically skilled owners and mechanics.

Level 3: Bearing change. Factory only.

I want to buy an UltraFront SX hub could you tell me spoke length for my rim?

I want to buy an UltraHub SLX hub could you tell me spoke length for my rim?

I want to buy an UltraRear SX hub could you tell me spoke length for my rim?

I want to buy an UltraHub SL could you tell me spoke length for my rim?
Yes, we offer a spoke calculation service for alloy rims.
Basically a correct spoke calculation requires exact "spoke-end" diameter, this depends on your rim and nipple type.
1) Insert nipples into 2 opposite rim holes.
2) Precisely measure distance between nipples.
3) Add 2x nipple height to distance above, this is "spoke-end" diameter.
4) Hub/rim drilling and lacing pattern, (our normal choice is radial front and rear left side, crossing on drive side only).

We recommend Sapim spokes since their regular spokes accept thick hub flanges, DT normally fits thin flanges only and reqest special ordering specifying "elbow" for 3.9mm thick flanges.
